Some of the qualities you should look for in your repair shop include:
Being able to explain clearly and concisely the repairs needed to return an instrument to top playing condition,

Area of service expertise (i.e. some specialize in pianos or strings, etc.)
A competent music repair shop will be able to give you estimates for routine services (such as pad replacement in woodwinds), however sometimes the instrument needs to be seen in person so that the repairman can see exactly what is wrong.
Another good quality for a repair person to have is a passion for music. It’s important to have a good relationship with your repair person, and by being able to share a common passion of music, it will help you trust and get to know them.
